Alfredo Polti SA (Arvigo)

The company Alfredo Polti SA is a typical family business as it is often found in the natural stone industry in the south of Switzerland. The company was founded in 1950 by Alfredo Polti, when he set up a workshop in Grono for the processing of Calanca gneiss.

This gneiss had already been quarried since 1920 in the quarries of Arvigo by Alfredo's father Giovanni Polti, a pioneer in this field. In 1960, Alfredo Polti moved the entire production to Arvigo in order to integrate the extraction of the raw material from his own quarry with the modern facilities of the new workshops in a single production flow.

The Calanca gneiss quarried in the Alfredo Polti SA quarry is processed by experienced stonemasons, either by hand or mechanically, using the latest stone processing machinery. In part, the material is also sold as rough blocks, shaped or rectangular slabs, as well as masonry blocks and ashlars in their raw state.

The offer is very extensive and includes products for:

• civil engineering and road construction
• building construction
• gardening, landscaping and cemetery design
• various equipment up to the demanding requirements of modern architecture.

About 90% of the production is destined for the internal Swiss market. The rest is exported, the largest part to Germany, Italy, Austria and France. In many cities of these countries it is possible to admire important objects realized with the Calanca gneiss of Alfredo Polti SA.

The management in the quarry and in the workshops in Arvigo is ensured by Giovanni Polti and in the administrative field by Vania Polti Ambrosini. Since 2013 Alfredo Polti SA has been operating the only quarry in the Calanca Valley.
